Updates to Subdivision, Development & Servicing Bylaw

April 13, 2023

News Release

Transportation design standards in the Subdivision, Development & Servicing (SDS) Bylaw are being updated. The SDS bylaw guides the design and construction of infrastructure in the city. These updates come after more than 20 years without significant changes and will align the bylaw with current best practices and design standards.  “The SDS Bylaw regulates infrastructure standards in Kelowna and the updates align with priorities set in the 2040 Official Community Plan, as well as the Transportation Master Plan,”  says Chad Williams, Senior Transportation Planning Engineer. “This update is a critical part of supporting the City’s growth strategies, so constructed infrastructure can support new housing and services. This includes providing appropriate space for the various users on our streets, focusing improvements where we see the highest levels of activity, and managing the challenges of more people moving through the city.”  The updated transportation section includes more contextual guidelines reflecting how and where Kelowna is growing, with better consideration of land use context, added sections to support sustainable transportation options, a greater focus on safety, and updated street cross sections. These changes align with the City’s transportation goals and objectives while supporting continued growth.  Visit getinvolved.kelowna.ca/bylaw-7900-update to read more about the update, the process, and the documents that reflect the changes.
