Casorso active transportation extension coming soon

May 5, 2023

Beginning Monday, May 8, construction will begin for the Casorso Active Transportation Corridor (ATC) extension between KLO Road and Barrera Road.

The $4.4 million project is possible with the support of the British Columbia Active Transportation Infrastructure grant of $500,000 and the Canada Community-Building Fund of $2,190,400. It is anticipated to be complete in September and will be a continuous protected ATC leading from the Cawston/ Rail Trail Corridor to the Mission Greenway, Capital News Centre and H2O.

“This new corridor will close the gap in the existing north-south protected biking network by extending the Ethel/Casorso ATC, linking Downtown to Pandosy and Lower Mission,” said Senior Project Manager Derek Corning. “It will give people biking and walking better access to major destinations like Okanagan College, Casorso Elementary School, Rotary Beach Park and the Mission Creek Greenway.”

Construction is anticipated for completion at the end of September 2023 with expected work hours of 7 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Casorso Road will be closed during construction, starting between KLO Road and Lanfranco Road. When work is complete, this section will re-open and the closures will shift south on a block-by-block construction sequencing. Pedestrian and sidewalk access will be maintained, with intermittent closures and detours. Transit that operates on Casorso Rd between KLO and Lanfranco will be detoured to Richter St, and cyclists will be asked to dismount and use the sidewalks or follow signed detours.

The City sought feedback on the conceptual design for a new active transportation corridor (ATC) and the finalized design incorporates some of the input, with protected bike lanes separated from traffic that are suitable for users of all ages and abilities. Extending these lanes will allow more people to travel the City without the use of a vehicle helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and keep residents and tourists active.

The City of Kelowna is investing in neighborhoods and communities by expanding multi-modal routes of transportation, and the success of these projects was largely due to the much-appreciated cooperation of those directly affected. Patience is appreciated during these upgrades and the City apologizes in advance for any inconveniences.
