Highlights of February 13 Council meeting

February 14, 2023

City finances

Details around a new Financial Health Dashboard and new measures for the 2023 financial year were reviewed by Council. The new financial indicators are expected to better address key organizational risks in the current economic climate as well as financial constraints that are specific to the City and municipalities.

Wildfire mitigation

Council OK’d a plan by staff to apply for a $180,000 grant to the provincial government’s Community Resiliency Investment Program, intended to reduce the risk and impact of wildfire to BC communities. If successful, the grant will fund several initiatives, including a residential debris chipping program and a fuel modification project within McKinley Mountain Park.

Mental health and substance abuse

Council endorsed two resolutions around improving mental health and substance abuse supports in the community. Council is asking the provincial government to increase investment in mental health treatment, withdrawal management, and substance use programs, as well as asking to update the government’s A Pathway to Hope program to fund and establish regional care campuses for people requiring specialized mental health supports.

Public input to Council

Council debated several opportunities to better engage with the public. Council agreed to use Committee of the Whole meetings to hear from delegations or the public on specific matters of interest to Council.
